Can you get herpes from a public toilet seat?
Sydney asked:
I saw an episode of House and it said you can get herpes from a public toilet seat if you don't use one of those paper covers, is this true?

“Don’t Worry? Get Tested!”
That’s a good question. I’ve always heard you could catch that and other things from a toilet seat but I don’t know for a fact if you can or not. Call you local health dept. and ask them, they will know.

Do a search on ‘stds toilet seat’ (no quotes) and see what you find. Someone else just asked a similar question a bit ago, and the article I copied an answer for him from said that you could possibly get crabs, but GENERALLY not STDS (which isn’t saying that you cannot…just that it’s not common).
Read up on it so you’ll be informed if it’s a concern to you.

Yes it is true. A kid that lives down the street from caught herpies like that . I know it was not sexually transmitted because this kid is only 5. She has a bad habit of sitting on the toilet seat in public places.

It’s highly unlikely that you would get a sexually transmitted disease (STD), such as chlamydia or genital herpes, from a toilet seat. Most STDs are transmitted only during sexual contact, either by skin-to-skin contact or through exchange of bodily fluids. The microorganisms — bacteria and viruses — that cause STDs tend to be highly sensitive to environmental conditions and can’t survive outside the human body for very long.
