Can genital herpes be passed on to a person even though they haven’t had an outbreak?
Lauren asked:
My bf has genital herpes. He hasn't had an outbreak in 2 months. I've been reading on medical sites and they say that the person can still pass it onto you even though they haven't had an outbreak. How is this possible? It just makes me really paranoid.

There are a few herpes remedies that can be used to minimize this painful and often embarrassing condition. However, understanding what herpes is and how it works is also part of what will make the herpes remedies themselves especially useful and worthwhile.
Herpes comes in two forms: Type 1 which will often cause sores around the mouth and lips and occasionally the genitals. Type 2 which causes sores around the genitals. Basically herpes is a virus that is passed from intimate contact but also from simple non-sexual contact. The symptoms are usually flue like and very painful open sores. Once someone has been infected, they have the virus for life, even though the episodes will often wane and disappear, the virus is still there in the body and can still be passed from person to person without even signs of an attack. Therefore it is important that precautions are always taken.
Take care,

Yes there is always a slight risk of passing herpes even when there is no out break. Your BF is less contagious if he doesn’t have an out break but he can shed the virus in between out breaks. He has even less risk of passing herpes on, if he is taking aniviral medication to suppress his out breaks. That is why herpes can be spread in between out breaks.
Your BF will always have the herpes virus in his body even though he hasn’t had an out break in 2 months.

The herpes simplex virus is passed from skin-to-skin contact. It easily enters through mucus membranes, which is the moist skin which lines the mouth and genital area. It also may enter through a cut or break in the skin on other parts of the body. Herpes can be passed back and forth between the mouth and the genital area, so be aware of this during sex. Genital herpes is very contagious and so it’s important to practice safe sex and be aware of the people we are having sexual intercourse with.
