Always ALWAYS use a condom, even though there is no outbreak, you can still pass the virus along to your partner.
Update-If your partner is female, use a dental dam is she performs oral sex on you. If you dont have one of these, you can take a condom and split in in half.

There is still a small chance you can pass it along even when using a condom. Taking anti viral medication each day greatly reduces the chances of transmission.
Go have a chat to your doctor about it and he let you know which medication would be best for you.

Get in tune with your out break symptoms and never have sex when you think your getting or having an out break. Also suppressive therapy (ie Valtrex) can help prevent out breaks and it can help prevent passing herpes onto your new partner.
You can still pass herpes on even if you use a condom. Condoms don’t cover all of the areas of your genitals that herpes can occur on. The condom only protects the shaft of the penis, herpes takes skin to skin contact to pass on there are still other ares of his genitals that are coming into contact with herpes.

really think u should be talking to ur doctor and if u have herpes u have hopefully seen a doctor — he/she will tell u what and how u should be protecting urself and ur partners.

Valtrex and the other herpes suppressing drugs claim to decrease the chances of being contagious by up to 50%. Barrier methods work fairly well – my dentist offers the rubber material he uses for dental work (they call them dams) to his patients to use for safer oral sex. Try to avoid sex during an active outbreak, although there are many documented cases of people still being contagious with no symptoms.
