How do I prevent myself from catching oral herpes?

isuckatphysics asked:

I read that 90% of people over 40 have it. I tested negative for oral herpes so I don't have immunity towards it. My roommate got cold sores, and I'm afraid of catching it because it would make me more vunerable to HIV.
How do I prevent catching it from him?
does anyone know how contagious the virus is? I mean, can I still use utensils after they've been washed? does microwaving bowls kill the virus or freezing bowls?

90% of people over 40?!?!?!? Where on earth did you read that statistic.

Dont have multiple sex partners and get to know them before you mess around. Dont put your mouth on open sores on other people.

dont drink from the same glass, don’t eat from the same spoon, don’t touch his face and then touch anything on yours. always wash your hands and dissinfect anything he has touched. also, don’t worry. a cold sore isn’t that bad. nobody really thinks of it as herpes. only when it get into the genitals does it get a bad stigma.

Wow! Talk about misinformation. Herpes does not make you vulnerable to HIV. Totally different disease!

The vast majority of the population (has nothing to do with being over 40) has Herpes Simplex I. It is highly contageous.

If you have it, you need to avoid physical contact with others as soon as you feel the onset tingle of symptoms.

If you don’t have it, you need to avoid physical contact with others who may have it. This includes kissing, sharing cups, touching (infected persons hands touch their cold sore and then touch you), etc.

don’t kiss him, don’t drink from a common cup, don’t use any utensils that he does, and wash your hands frequently. If you tested negative for the varicella virus, you may want to get the vaccine that is now available. Oral Herpes is caused by the same virus that causes the Chicken Pox.

cold sore’s are a minor form of herpes but can be spread. The only way to keep from ever getting it is to never have your mouth on anything that has herpies. you can get them in other place’s beside the mouth. You might want to let your roommate now that a vitamin supplement called l-lysine will help cold sore’s heal faster and taken daily will keep them from coming back just for there comfort.

Just becuase you tested negative doesn’t mean you don’t have it. You have to have an recent outbreak to have the anitbodies in your blood. That’s the wonderful thing about herpes and why so many people have it and do not know. 90% of peeps with HSV-2 (although it’s not oral) that have it do not know.

However, if you do not get oral sores then you probably don’t have it. In anycase, you probably shouldn’t swap spit with your roommate if he is having an oral breakout, or share his utensils.

Don’t be putting no liplocks on him and you will be fine. It has to be direct contact for sexually transmitted disease to spread. Hence STD’s. Have roommate get zovirix prescription. It kills outbreak at first tingle or if you miss tingle and have actual outbreak it can clear it up in as little as two days. It is easy to be responsible and keep a tube of this ointment in the medicine cabinet at all times.

Note: not 90% over 40 but 90% of the WHOLE population has cold sore herpes (kids included) and no it doesnt really make you “more” vunerable to HIV. We are all vunerable to getting HIV. Yes most people have HSV-1 (oral) unfortunately. I never had it nor did my parents. However I made the mistake of kissing guys with a visable “cold sore” in the past when i was younger and didnt know better. Thankfully i have only had a cold sore once and it hasnt come back (it is latent in my body now). My fiance has never had a cold sore and we will try to keep it that way.
The way to NOT catch it is to not kiss anyone who has a visible cold sore or feels one coming on (some people get a tingly feeling where the cold sore usually appears). Do not share ANY cups, chapstick, anything that his lips come in contact with, EVER. And never kiss a girl who has a visible cold sore anywhere. I have a friend who only gets cold sores under her nose, never on her lips. So the danger is coming in contact with a cold sore when it is active. Cold sores can spread on the host and pass onto another person.
Another danger is that HSV-1 (oral) can spread to the genitals! HSV-2 is the genital form but HSV-1 can affect the genitals too if it gets down there.
So just be careful who you kiss. Use your brain. Do not kiss anyone with a visible cold sore anywhere on their body and do not share any cups, chapstick ,etc with anyone who has a visible cold sore.
So you wont catch his cold sore as long as you are not touching him (his hands that he just touched his cold sore with) and not sharing anything with him (like drinks, food, etc). So be mindful but not fearful.
Many children have cold sores because their parents kiss them when they have an active cold sore. That is why the majority of the population have cold sores. Lack of education. I know now not to kiss or share anything with my fiance if i get a cold sore again and not to kiss anyone else if i get one again.
My fiance’s mother who is a nurse told me that she heard about an aunt who kissed her newborn niece on the mouth and the child DIED because the child’s immune system couldnt handle herpes.
Any woman with active HSV-2 (genital) lesions who goes into labor is immediately given a C-section because if the baby delivers normally the child will get herpes and die almost immediately.
For adults herpes is just an inconvience and embarrassment.
Always practice safe sex too (dont sleep with loose people and always use a condom).

I think herpes is only spread by actually touching the infected parts. In other words don’t kiss or suck or lick on somebody with them. You can’t can’t it any other way.
