The initial out break can happen any where from 2-20 days after contact with some one who has herpes, or it can take months to years since your immune system can suppress the virus or puts it into dormancy.
Herpes can be suppressed by your immune system to lie dormant for periods of time.
I know the feeling as I was diagnosed a little over year ago. I felt so alone and depressed because no one else I knew of has herpes. When I told my boy friend, he was in shock too and wondered where it could have came from. He got tested and found out that he had herpes too. He just had no idea that he had herpes and I didn’t know any better at the time what cold sores (oral herpes) were.
Living with herpes can be a pain in the you know where specially when it comes to dating and it can make you feel ashamed or dirty, when you were doing nothing wrong when you got herpes. Over time out breaks will get better.
It’s kind of tricky to pin point when you could have gotten herpes. Since symptoms could start showing in as little as 2-20 days or it could stay dormant until months and years later.

I think I had an outbreak very soon after, but I really can’t recall, I’ve had it for many years now.
I’m sorry you’ve been diagnosed with this and the truth is, you may never know who passed it to you.
The best thing you can do for yourself is to get educated on the virus and to keep your immune system as healthy as you possibly can. Also, using an anti-viral will help reduce the number of outbreaks you may experience.
