How long does it take for initial herpes to show up?
EX asked:
Three weeks ago I had sex with a guy who had herpes. A week later I ended up going to the hospital because I was experiencing some irregular vaginal bleeding. They took drew some blood and I had a pap smear. My doctor said that it was jus menorrhagia. I barley found out today that the guy had herpes. I don't have any cold sores or anything. And my vagina looks normal.

Herpes rarley causing vaginal bleeding. The first attack if your immune system is low, will be in 14 days after the initial infection, like hot and ichy in your intimacy area. but the blood test can answer this question. So, repeat the test after a month to know if your body is developing the immune system to fight this ( simplex type is the common one).

Get tested!
If you develop sores they should appear within a couple of weeks. When they appear, a doctor can take a swab and have it tested.
Even if you don’t notice anything unusual, you should still get tested. Herpes is present in many people without symptoms (that’s why it’s so widely spread). If you have no symptoms, have a blood test done in about 3 months (it’ll take a while for antibodies to show up in blood).
From what I’ve heard, you need to specifically request that the blood sample be screened for Herpes.
There’s piles of info online about it. Check out WebMD, or do a search for “Herpes symptoms” if you want more info.
I hope you don’t have it!! But you absolutely need to get tested.
Blue: Proper use of condoms *reduces* your chance of contracting an STD, it doesn’t eliminate it. Even if the guy had used a condom, she could still contract an STD, especially one like herpes. Condoms are a must, but the only “safe” sex is no sex.

Herpes can be sneaky. You can contract it immediately and have an immediate outbreak (crusty, blister like lesions that are very painful) or you can be asymptomatic, or show no signs of infection at all. I would recommend another visit to your physician and get a full STD workup, so that you can know if you are infected with an std or virus. Likewise, once you know, you can better protect yourself and your partners.
Also, sometimes people do not know that they are infected with an std. Please get yourself checked out. Also, even if you had used condoms, there is still a chance that you could have contracted herpes, since it can be transmitted through skin to skin contact if your partner was having an active outbreak.
Good luck.

A condom won’t protect you from herpes because the lesions can also be on uncovered areas.
It can take 6 months for symptoms to appear and they may never appear. Transmission is not certain and you can also be a carrier without symptoms.
