Just Diagnosed with Herpes.Help?
Susan W asked:
So I am experiencing my first outbreak. I'm freaking out a bit. Any useful advise is much needed. I'm sort of an emmotional wreck right now. Started on meds yesterday and throughout today the outbreak has gotten much worse. I am a runner and so that's not an option for a few days. Too painful...so there goes my stress relief. How long do outbreaks last. The frustration is that I have no idea when I came in contact with H and not sure who I have to thank for my luck. Please help with any advise.

Just chill the best you can. It will take a few days for the first one to start going away.
Get on the daily therapy with the antivirals like Valtrex. The outbreaks are less painful and less often with time. Protect your partners. Good luck.

Sorry to hear about your illness. I was diagnosed about a month ago. You basically just have to wait it out and let the antiviral do its job. I know what you are going through. I cried in the office when the doctor told me. It’s going to take a few days for the medicine to take effect. I had a 5 day regimen and the outbreak did not fully clear up until a four to five days after I completed the meds. Unfortunately, I would say you still have a little more than a week to go. It is different for everyone and depends on how quickly your body can fight off the infection. My doctor gave me Lidocaine ointment for the pain. It is a topical anesthetic sometimes used for hemorroids. You can ask your doctor about that. It is a bit messy, but it helped. Also, you can use oral pain meds like ibuprofen or tylenol. They don’t do much, but can help a bit. I cheated and used my mom’s pain meds from a surgery she had. Once the sores burst, you know you are on the road to recovery. I know it sounds gross, but odds are you won’t have another outbreak for a bit. Just get lots of rest and eat well. Stress can make it worse, so take it easy. I know there is a lot going through your head right now, but you have to remember that it is an inconvenience and not fatal. Another bit of good news, your first outbreak is usually the worst. Once you find a drug regiment that fits your outbreak frequency, the disease can be managed pretty well. You will also develop signs that tell you when an outbreak is coming and take medication accordingly. I’ve heard it described as a tingling in the area or a slight dull pain. Don’t worry, this disease is manageable and maybe you’ll be one of the lucky ones that rarely has an outbreak. Good Luck!!

I to have herpes. And when i had my first outbreak i didn’t know what it was and waited like 3 days before calling my doctor. My doctor told me what it was and that i need valtrex. I only have to take it during outbreaks. Normally the outbreaks last about 5-7 days and that are painful but in time you learn things that make them feel better. I like to soak in a tub of cool water. Plus just pat dry when you go to the bathroom because popping any of them will make them spread more. Another thing to keep in mind is that herpes can stay dormant for up to 2 years before you even know you have it. There are now blood test for it and until an outbreak accures you have know way of knowing. Luckily for me i only have an outbreak about every 2 years and i have had 2 children since i was first diagnosed and i am also married now and my husband doesn’t have it so far. So remember my prayers are with you cause i know how hard it is and good luck.

my first breakout was really bad and lasted 3 weeks, but since then i havn’t had any really (2 1/2 yrs.) i take l-lysine, vitamin c and zinc. L-lysine one 3 times when starting 2 get symptoms. And 2 daily for prevention. The others just once a day. I stopped taking valtrex about 1 yr. ago i’ve still not had a breakout, nor spread it 2 anyone. Also avoid arginine I think it’s classified as a vitamin look it up, and see what foods it’s in. I hope i’ve helped.

I’m sorry to hear about it. I have had herpes for 8 years and my first outbreak lasted around 2 weeks. As time passes by it gets alot easier to deal with. Some people I know get their first outbreak really bad and then never see it again for the rest of their lives. Others get it more frequently, it really all depends on your body. The meds will definately help, I like valtrex best although I have tried acycloveir. They’re are also vitamins you can takelike l-lysine (stay away from arganine), foods you should avoid, exposure to the sun, stress, sleep deprivation, and make sure you get plenty of exercise. You just basically want to keep a strong immune system. In the beginning everything triggered it for me but now I rarely even feel like I am even about getting it and I rarely take the meds anymore. As your body gets used to it you will have less and less outbreaks. One day you may never get one again, it happens. Anyway it sounds like you are taking the right steps. My best advice to you is to learn as much as you can about it and talk to people who are living with it. You’re welcome to email me if you have any specific questions.

dont stress. the first outbreak is the worst, they get less frequent as time passes by.
But, stress or sickness can trigger another outbreak.
My wife and I have been married for 13 years and we found out we had herpes 3 weeks before we got married. We survived – so can you
