When is it possible to spread herpes?
nelie asked:
I know that you obviously can when you have an outbreak. Can you spread the virus when there are no signs of an outbreak? Can you spread herpes if you use a condom?

Eliminate Genital Warts
It’s always possible, but less likely if you use a condom and refrain from sex when u have an outbreak.

Herpes is spread from skin-to-skin contact, when there is virus present on the skin. So a condom reduces transmission (since it covers up a bunch of skin) but doensn’t prevent it (unless you somehow use a full body condom – or at least a full-genital-area condom.)
When you are having an outbreak, there is (obviously) virus on your skin. But sometimes, you will have outbreaks without any symptoms. So yes, you can spread the virus when you don’t have symptoms.
To be specific, it is not true that you are always contageous. In fact, with presumed condom use, monogamous partners infected each other at a rate of roughly 2% per year. (A linki to that study is below.) You are only contageous when you are having an outbreak – known or unknown. So the tricky part is that you DON’T KNOW when you are contageous. So you need to act as if you are contageous all the time.
For more info, I’d check out the web site of the American Social Health Assocation. I’ve put their web site below, also.
Good question.

yep u can spread herpes even when there are no signs outbreaks, but u are less likely to pass it on when there are no signs but there is still a risk. since condoms don’t protect all areas which herpes can spread to condoms are not 100% effective agaisnt herpes. if u are taking medication and using condoms then the risk is cut down some.

According to many sites that I have researched (and I have researched hundreds since being diagnosed) there are a few days out of every month that your body sheds the virus and you may or may not be having an outbreak or show any signs of the virus but are contagious.
It is called “Asymptomatic viral shedding” when there are no signs of an out break during the shedding process. There is no way of knowing if you are shedding and Asymptomatic viral shedding is now recognized as a major cause of new infections.
The skin that carries the virus is anywhere from the top of your legs to your abdomen/upper buttocks. And is spread from skin to skin contact…basically anywhere that a pair of boxer shorts covers whether you are having a breakout or not.
The herpes virus can be transmitted when an area of skin that is shedding the active virus comes into contact with uninfected skin in the genital, anal or mouth areas of another individual. This means direct oral-oral, genital-genital, oral-genital, genital-anal or oral-anal contact
There is nothing that completely removes the risk of spreading the virus. As stated above medication and condoms lower the risk but do not remove it.
Go to the site below…it is great and will answer so many of your questions. It has a very user friendly and easy to follow layout.
